1. A succulent arrangement in a pumpkin
A succulent arrangement always creates a beautiful effect that fits into any decor. Since the plants have the same soil and water requirements, it's easy to provide different varieties with the conditions they need to thrive.
White, pastel-coloured, green, blue or orange pumpkins pair particularly well with the beautiful shades of succulents.
What you need for your pumpkin
- A pumpkin that is wider than it is tall
- A nice variety of succulents (vary the shapes, colours and sizes)
- Hot glue
- Sphagnum peat moss

How to create a succulent arrangement step by step?
- Make a hole on top of your pumpkin and fill it with sphagnum peat moss. (To grow succulents in soil, scoop out the inside of the pumpkin with a spoon and remove all the seeds.)
- Use hot glue to stick 3-5 cm of sphagnum peat moss to the sides of the hole.
- Arrange the succulents with the largest ones in the middle. Do the same if you are planting in a container.
- Add sphagnum peat moss between the plants to fill in any empty spaces and hide the potting soil if needed.
- Add decorative elements like small branches, berries or foliage (optional).
How to care for succulent pumpkins?
Water your succulents once or twice a week to saturate the sphagnum peat moss. Avoid placing your pumpkin in direct sunlight. If you live in an area where temperatures are still mild at this time of year, you can take them outside for a few hours to decorate but avoid the cold and rain.
TIP: You can also create a succulent arrangement in a pot that you simply insert into the pumpkin. For an economical and maintenance-free option, get artificial succulents!
2. Use a pumpkin as a flower vase
What you need for your Halloween floral arrangement:
- Fresh flowers
- A small vase or Mason jar
- Bleach
- Vaseline
- Decorative accessories such as apples, acorns, pinecones, oak leaves, grass flowers, astilbe, stonecrop, etc. (optional)
How to prepare a pumpkin for a floral arrangement and how to make it last?
- Cut off the top to create an opening large enough to insert your vase or pot.
- Scoop out the inside of the pumpkin with a spoon and remove all the seeds.
- Soak the pumpkin in a bleach solution (one teaspoon of bleach per gallon of water) for 30 minutes.
- Coat the inside of the pumpkin with petroleum jelly to extend its durability.
What is the basic rule of floral arrangement?
- Choose your flowers (for a balanced arrangement, see the 3-5-8 rule used by florists below).
- Fill your vase or pot with water and insert it into the pumpkin.
- Arrange the foliage first (oak leaves, ferns, wheat stalks).
- Add the larger flowers (hydrangeas, sunflowers, roses, chrysanthemums, etc.). Opt for seasonal flowers or fall colours (ochre, orange, coral, copper, mauve, black).
- Distribute the filler flowers to fill empty spaces.
TIP: Instead of a pot or vase, you can use a floral foam sponge and stick the stems of your flowers in it. This is a great option for floral arrangements made in small pumpkins or if you don't want to empty the pumpkin entirely.

Want to enjoy your decorations longer? Use dried flowers (Chinese lanterns, baby's-breath, everlasting flowers, statice) or artificial ones. By opting for an artificial pumpkin, your floral arrangement can even be reused year after year.
You can also use your pumpkins as planters (pumpkins that are wider than they are tall are often preferable). In the home, replace the vase with an exotic plant (in its pot). Outside, the pumpkins placed at the entrance can be used as decorative pots for your chrysanthemums.
TIP: Since the pumpkin will eventually decompose, protect the surfaces on which you place it by using a tray or a plate.

The 3-5-8 rule is used by florists to ensure successful floral arrangements. Easy to apply, this rule recommends combining three types of flowers, five stems of greenery and eight stems of filler flowers for guaranteed results.

3. How to paint a pumpkin?

What kind of paint do you use on a pumpkin?
Use acrylic paint in tubes or markers. Markers are easier to use and more precise, but tube paint is more economical and allows you to cover larger areas.

4. Revamp your summer pots
Have you already removed your summer plants from your planters to replace them with chrysanthemums or other fall flowers? Now's the time to give them the finishing touches.
Add some dark-coloured branches and floral stems with natural or artificial leaves. Oak branches are particularly interesting at this time of year, as the golden leaves often remain attached to the branches once dried. As a bonus, they can be decorated with acorns.

For a natural, rustic effect, use strips made of jute instead.
Attach black-painted tree branches, branches decorated with coloured or dried leaves, or even vines to the noodles. Oak leaves often have a beautiful golden colour at this time of year. Opt for those with acorns!
Add dried or artificial flowers, such as large sunflowers, grass leaves, astilbe or stonecrop flowers from the garden, dried corn leaves, or colourful corn cobs.
