This year’s Christmas trends bring a breath of fresh air. While past Christmases are never forgotten, a few striking, even flashy, additions are enough to transform the holiday season in a remarkable way. Nordic chic, theatrical glamour, reinvented traditional styles… Here are the major trends of the moment and the plants that complete the decor.
1. Nordic cabin
Whistler, Catskill, Lake Louise, Tremblant, Aspen… The trend draws inspiration from North America’s most beautiful snowy destinations. On one hand, there’s the snow-covered landscape, the wind rustling through the tall white fir trees, the mountains and their natural beauty. On the other, the warmth of a wood fire, fur blankets, the aroma of coffee and the amber hue of a spirit served on the rocks.
Atmosphere: A cozy atmosphere, an après-ski evening with friends. The ambiance is warm, inviting and comfortable.
Colours: Forest green, moss green, white, off-white, cognac, caramel, mahogany, mocha, grey, midnight blue, and slightly tarnished metals, copper or gold.
Materials: Natural, sometimes raw: wood, fir branches, fur, wool, plaids.
Accessories: Natural and authentic accessories… fir garlands, snow-covered branches, pine cones, berries, wooden skis, deer antlers, deer and moose sculptures…
Plants: Since green has the place of honour, green plants join the party. The focus is on varying intensities, from deep green to soft green, with particular attention paid to textures and gradients. Variegated plants add a touch of white or cream that echoes the snowy landscape. We also love finely cut foliage reminiscent of fern fronds or deer antlers, and plants with a lichen-like appearance.
Our suggestions to complement the decor: Norfolk pine, Manjula pothos, Micans, Tortum, Chocolate Empress, Caramel and Elegans philodendrons, and indoor ferns Adiantum raddianum, Davallia trichomanoides, Asplenium nidus Campio, Davallia canariensis, Selaginella Moss Gold (looking like moss) or Actiniopteris radiata (similar to pine branches).
PRO TIP: Philodendrons thrive in a well-draining, aerated substrate that is rich in organic matter, such as our Potting Mix. Watering them with water that is too cold can cause brown spots to appear on their leaves. We recommend using room-temperature water that has been left to stand for 24 hours.
2. Broadway
Sometimes extravagant, but more often stunningly refined, this trend draws inspiration from the world of entertainment and the lively nights of cabarets. Striking, surprising and captivating, contrasts seduce, sequins sparkle and the stars align. Magic is in the air… Showtime!
Atmosphere: Sometimes sophisticated and refined, sometimes exuberant and flashy, the atmosphere is festive, lively like a music hall. The stage, the show, the laughter, the frenetic dancing, the champagne flowing freely… Opulence, effervescence, audacity and originality are all present.
Colours: Dazzling combinations of black and white, black and gold, sapphire blue and gold, copper and turquoise, powder pink and pale green.
Materials: Sequins, feathers, pearls, velvet and fringes, gold and shimmering finishes… anything that shines like jewellery!
Accessories: Use multiple light sources on your handrails, mantelpiece and furniture to create a magical atmosphere. The stage is given over to shimmering curtains, theatrical masks, harlequin costumes, garlands of golden beads and geometric patterns… The accessories are drawn from the world of entertainment, both past and present: French cancan, Charleston, grand operas, Broadway shows…
Plants: Here again, the desired effect is opulent and exuberant. The focus is on large-sized or miniature plants with an exotic look. We also love plants with pink hues!
Our suggestions to complement the decor: The stars of the moment include monstera, palm tree, strelitzia (bird of paradise), banana tree, parlor maple (abutilon), aglaonema, pineapple, bromeliad, cordyline, passion flower, string of pearls, stromanthus, alocasia.
TIP: Large plants don't necessarily need to be repotted. If you want to slow their growth, keep the current pot, but change the potting mix every 3 to 5 years to remove accumulated minerals, provide fresh nutrients and keep the roots healthy.
3. Champagne and rosé wine
Chic and romantic, this trend unveils a sophisticated decor of rare elegance. Peach, cream and pink add softness and delicacy to the warm, shimmering tones of copper and gold. Delightfully pearlescent finishes brighten up every room… Because all that glitters isn't necessarily gold.
Atmosphere: Contemporary, sophisticated and elegant, the atmosphere is soft yet vibrant thanks to the exquisite finishes. Refreshing and bubbly, champagne is served!
Colours: Shiny or brushed metals are predominant and are combined. Once coated with mother-of-pearl, delicate pastels take on a festive air alongside metallic colours. Peach, powder pink, cream, champagne, copper, gold… sometimes with a touch of silver, tin, powder blue or sage green.
Materials: Mother-of-pearl, velvet, precious metals, white pearls, glass and crystal.
Accessories: Ribbons, silk flowers, snow-covered fir trees, garlands of white pearls, pearly snowflakes and icicles, glass Christmas ornaments. For a complete effect, crystal chandeliers are added to the decor, along with numerous tin or antique gold candlesticks.
Plants: Pink plants, of course, but also pastel-coloured succulents and flowers. We especially love Christmas plants with white, cream or pink blooms.
Our suggestions to complement the decor: Calathea Triostar, tradescantia, fittonia, hellebore (Christmas rose), poinsettia, Christmas cactus, amaryllis, florist's cyclamen, echeveria, haworthia, Aeonium, Ceropegia woodii f. Variegata or Silver Glory, Sedum burrito.
PRO TIP: Succulents need plenty of light but require little water (1 to 2 waterings per month in summer, one watering per month in winter, sometimes less). Water only when the soil is dry and never leave water in the saucer.
After repotting with our Premium Cactus Mix, water very sparingly for the following two months.
4. White Mountains, a classic reinvented
Inspired by the White Mountains, this trend blends tradition with a modern spirit. Traditional hues, such as red and green, are reinvented with shades of burgundy and emerald green. Like golden, these colours feature modern, glossy, matte or subtly metallic finishes with copper accents for a luminous and refined touch.
Atmosphere: Antique charm and modernity come together to create the warm and subtly nostalgic atmosphere of New England towns and villages. Here, you'll find the spirit of Christmases past, but also of Christmases to come, where the delicious aromas of cranberry, balsam fir and gingerbread fill the air.
Colours: Traditional colours take on a rich, velvety hue, while reds become burgundy, aubergine, garnet, carmine and purple. Green becomes luminous and precious, adopting shades of emerald, jade, green sapphire or malachite. These are paired with gold and brass.
Materials: Wood is used for its warmth, while glass and porcelain (for figurines, villages and accessories) evoke the past. Silky or velvety fabrics, plaids and soft, homemade woollens are also part of the festivities.
Accessories: Rich-coloured velvet or silk ribbons set the tone for the trend. Christmas trees are lavishly decorated, almost completely covered. Wreaths and garlands of berries in rich colours, old-time villages, slightly vintage figurines, pine cones, candles…
Plants: Here again, the classics take centre stage. Decorate with ivy and ferns, poinsettias and plants with rich, dark, nuanced foliage, sometimes edged in white or cream. Oh! And don't forget to add plants with candy cane colours.
Our suggestions to complement the decor: Poinsettia, caladium, calathea, fittonia, kalanchoe, Boston fern and English ivy.
TIP: Fittonias are difficult to satisfy… They need bright but indirect light, consistently moist but well-drained soil, and high humidity (mist the foliage or use a humidifier). Water regularly, but never overwater to avoid root rot.
Our Organic Moisture Mix is a good option as it prevents over and underwatering!
