Growing grass from seed is easy and cost-effective. Just give it a little TLC, water, sunlight, and fertilizer and you will have a beautiful lawn in about 3 weeks’ time. You can grow grass from seed at the beginning or end of the growing season when soil temperatures are at least 12ºC.

1. Prepare the soil

Remove all debris, perennial roots, and stones. If the area has become overgrown with weeds, use a herbicide to get rid of them.

2. Fertilize the soil

After fertilizing, douse the area with water to help the fertilizer seep deep into the soil. Wait for the water to absorb into the soil. Gently rake level.

3. Immediately sprinkle your grass seeds using a spreader

For the best results, seed the whole patch lengthwise, then seed the whole patch widthwise. This ensures full coverage. Rake gently to help push the seed into the soil. Tap lightly with the back of the rake. Seed should be buried no deeper than 6 mm (1/4 inch).

4. Maintain your new grass

Water gently, and keep damp until grass has grown 3 cm (1 1/4 inch) high. New grass should not be cut until it reaches a height of 8 cm (3 inches). After your lawn’s third cutting, fertilize for an extra boost.
